As South Australians, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to four-wheel drive, camping and boating options. In a state that’s bigger than many countries, travellers have many free campsite options but to make the experience truly memorable you need some good gear.
We catch up with the organisers of the upcoming Australian 4WD and Adventure Show at the Adelaide Showground at a great free camping site near Mannum, together we go in search of Murray Cod and Callop.
Mannum is only about 80km’s from the city which means you could be exploring the lower reaches of the Murray River an hour or so after knock-off time from work. In this heritage town, the romance of the old paddle steamers looms large with the PS Marion and the Mayflower recalling the halcyon days of steam but today we’re in something a little more modern courtesy of Yamaha Pitman Marine.
Today we’re in search of a feed with keen fisherman Jeff Bellman as our guide. A bloke who in years past has caught a mighty Murray Cod or two.
“They’re still here, but you’re not allowed to take them out of the water and you must release them,” says Jeff. Not so with Callop though. Jeff’s photos are proof that he’s had plenty of fun out here with his tiger worms and an assortment of lures.
No luck for us today but fish is certainly on the menu at the historic Pretoria Hotel where we dropped in for a quick stop before heading back to camp.
We’ve been tagging along with a crew who know their stuff and will have plenty of it on display later this month at the Australian 4WD and Adventure Show at the Adelaide Showground from Friday, October 25th to Sunday, October 27th. Head to their website for all the details.
