The Yorke Peninsula is one of the richest wheat and barley regions in the world. Some of the biggest breweries across Australia and Asia use malted barley from this area, but it’s not the beer we’re talking about – there’s another drop from this crop that has the whole peninsula excited!
Sunny Hill Distillery is located just north of Arthurton (which is right in the middle of the peninsula between Ardrossan and Moonta.) Inside their former machinery shed, owners Sam and Olivia Colliver distill their unique blend of vodka and gin from wheat, embracing the region’s grain industry.
The Colliver family has owned this property since 1872, so their home-grown ethos certainly rings true. The wheat is grown, harvested, smashed, fermented and distilled before being bottled and labelled on site.
With a background in all-grain brewing, the end goal for Sam is not just white spirits, but high-end whiskeys and rums in the not-too-distant future.
So next time you’re heading to the Yorke Peninsula, make sure you stop into their tasting room. Sit back on the couch with a drink in hand and take in the amazing views to the Spencer Gulf. It’s an ideal way to get a taste of the region.
