Follow the twists and turns up Greenhill road and you’ll soon arrive at Uraidla. The creative people that run the pub, have recently opened a café, bakery and brewery next door – making this trio of experiences well worth the short drive up the hill.
James Katsarelias from ‘Nettle and Knead’ fame is the head baker here, he and his team bake over 2,000 loaves a week, with sourdough the focus.
As you’d expect the café mainly stocks their delicious bakery fare – from croissants, Danishes and sweet scrolls… to gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls.
And to wash it all down, why not tempt your taste buds with another fermented favourite– beer!
You can sit and watch the goings on of the brewery from the large windows in the café, or pop next door to the pub for a cheeky pint or a beer flight.
Oscar Matthews is Uraidla’s head brewer – he got his intro to brewing at Slo Brew in California… then spent time at local label ‘Pirate Life’ before setting up shop here last year. He believes that it’s a good time to be a brewer “it actually pushes everyone to make better beer, you’ve got to be continually on your toes as everyone is trying to take things to the next level now”.
The Uraidla Republic Café, Bakery, Brewery and Hotel is open 7 days a week, and best of all, it’s only a 20 minute drive from the city. Check their website for opening hours. Delicious food, great beers and of course, that unique hills vibe. What more do you need!
