A cellar door in McLaren Vale offers visitors the chance to sip… and stay! Inkwell Wines has opened a stunning new building to showcase its sustainable vineyard and range of organic wines, and added a micro hotel, so guests can relax and enjoy glorious views in absolute luxury.
Inkwell Wines’ striking new premises boast plenty of design delights: Constructed around 20 shipping containers, the building embodies its owners’ principles of sustainability, and inside the cellar door, Irina Santiago-Brown and Dudley Brown are busy showcasing another aspect of that ethos – their organic wines.
Tastings are conducted on a 20-minute rotation, which allows Dudley and Irina to give focus to the experience for each group of visitors…. though Daisy the dog does tend to butt in!
There’s lots to taste… and lots of places to taste from. You can sample a shiraz out on the deck, or a viognier with a view from the purpose-built crow’s nest.
Below the tasting area are three beautiful hotel suites also constructed with sustainability in mind. Each suite feels perfectly private, even with the huge windows looking out to the vineyards.
This small but perfectly formed haven is called the “Hotel California Road” – named not just for the location of the property, but for the song–and it’s not the only musical reference. Many of Inkwell’s single-vineyard wines draw on song titles, but there’s a whole second range called Dub Style. And like the musical genre, it mixes things up a bit, taking some unexpected directions with familiar grape varieties.
Have a look at Inkwell’s website, where you can find out more about tasting options, or book yourself a room at the Hotel California Road – such a lovely place.
