In just under two weeks Adelaide will be kicking up its sequin-spangled heels for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. And this year, Thebarton Theatre takes a starring role, but that is not the only change in store!
“The Thebby” is an old stomping ground for the festival’s new Artistic Director Julia Zemiro, and her occasional partner in music mayhem Brian Nankervis. The pair brought their much-loved show RockWiz to this very theatre back in 2010 and almost a decade later, the band’s back together for an encore guaranteed to raise the roof.
Cabaret will be spreading its sparkle across the city with 245 performances over 16 days and nights, in 8 venues centred around the Thebby and Festival Centre precinct, including a favourite pop-up venue, the Famous Spiegeltent.
The Thebarton Theatre will be the venue for the festival’s opening night extravaganza – a multi-artist show titled ‘The House is Live’ featuring a cast packed with cabaret royalty and a few newer faces.
But Julia’s encouraging audiences to take a few risks with picking from the programme. “Dress Up. Look for the unexpected in yourself. See something you would NEVER see. Do it. There’s no time to waste.”
For those who like a bit of immersion, the dark, sinister and sweaty Swell Mob will be taking over the Festival Centre’s ArtSpace for a “choose-your-own-adventure” experience full of thieves, dandies and deception!
Some shows have already sold out, so shimmy straight over to the Adelaide cabaret festival website to see the entire program…and most importantly, book your tickets!
And the Festival folks are giving SA Weekender viewers the chance to fall in love with cabaret for free– tickets to two top-billing shows are up for grabs! There’s the world-renowned artist Ute Lemper, recounting her own conversations with icon Marlene Dietrich, and for those who fancy something a little naughty: the outrageous iOTA in “Slap and Tickle”.
